REUSE RECYCLE REDUCE

With the British public now said to be buying two million tonnes of clothing a year, textiles is fast becoming the UK`s largest waste stream.

It is something we take for granted.Whether we put on a shirt and tie for work, jacket for the evening or dressing gown at the weekend;clothes are a fundamental part of our lives. They say who we are, what we stand for ( or against ) and have evolved to become an extension of our values. Added to this, in the western world, modern fasion dictates that we keep up with trends. This result in a short shelf life with clothes no longer in fashion being quickly discarded and relocated to the back of the wardrobe.Gone are the days when we reuse old clothes as cloths and rags.

Instead, thanks to the disposable culture, mountains of clothes are still being sent to landfill unnecessarily.According to Defra, approximately 1.5 - 2 million tonnes of clothing waste is generated in the UK annually.Of this, 63% ( 1.2 million tonnes ) enters the household waste stream going to landfill. In 2007 the Government indentified textiles as a priority waste stream, acknowledging that there has been a 60% increase by weight between the years 1996 - 2005.

There are significant carbon benefits from diverting a tonne of textiles away from landfill, 2nd only to aluminium. But more important, it has a huge value that can be reused giving significant environmental and economic benefits.

You can make a difference unlocking the value of your unwanted clothes.
